July 15th: Whitsunday to Cairns
Whitsundays We started with a scenic flight over the Whitsundays. Clearance for overflying Lindeman and Hamilton Island was given immediately. At Whitehaven Beach Whitehaven Beach Anaconda III was spotted and was circled again and again and again at 500 feet. Almost everybody was on the beach and must have seen us, but none of the crew seemed to recognize us.

We continued north over Hook, Hayman and some other small islands before returning to the main land where we tracked north along the coast up to Townsville where we refueled and had lunch.

Hinchinbrook Island Getting a clearance for an orbit of Magnetic Island was no problem. Next islands were Orpheus and Pelorus. Then Hinchinbrook - a fairly large island very close to the mainland, with real mountains, secluded white beaches and a huge beautiful area of mangroves on the northern side.

Great Barrier Reef The Great Barrier Reef gets quiet close to Hinchinbrook Island so we took the opportunity to fly a bit eastwards and then north over some of the reefs (one is named 'Taylor Reef' which we found rather funny as it is the last name of the people we were going to stay with in Cairns).

Just north of Innisfail we got back over the mainland. The sugar industry is very dominant in this area - most farmers have apparently specialised on harvesting sugar cane.

With a bit of guidance the controller got us on the ground in Cairns. A few phone calls and Grummy was parked outside the hangar of General Aviation Maintenance, the guys that were going to do the 100-hour inspection. The airswitch read 98.9 hours - perfect timing!

Jason Taylor was so kind to pick us up and drive us back to his house where we were going to stay for a few days.
