July 22nd: Normanton to Tindal (Katherine)
Instead of staying the morning in Normanton and watch some more Rodeo, we decided to head of early and do another long day of flying - trying to make it to Tindal near Katherine so we could have a days rest there and see Katherine Gorge.

Desert and mangroves The first leg from Normanton to Borroloola was nice - flying along the coast over the mangroves is like flying over a huge fractal. We felt a bit like being trapped in a Mandelbrot ;-).

A military transporter with some 20 army guys on board landed shortly after us. As we had to wait for the refueler to get to the airport we let the transporter in front of us - big mistake! They took 1600 liters of AVGAS, which took most of an hour. For a while we were a bit nervous that they would empty the tanks.

The second and last leg over land to Tindal was a lot less interesting than the first leg. Absolutely nothing There was nothing to see but a lot of controlled bush fires - the smoke reduced the visibility a lot - we had to climb to 7500 feet to get out of the haze. The air was turbulent at lower levels and the high temperature made life hard for the backseat To help Lene from falling asleep passengers (that's their excuse for falling asleep again and again anyway). Not a very pleasant trip - at least we had a tailwind. The military control zone surrounding Tindal got activated when we were just 15 minutes away from it. The air traffic controllers were nice though and gave us clearance for a visual approach.
