August 4th: Cape Leveque

The day in keywords: Relaxing, walking, swimming, reading, eating ... and a snake.

Sunrise The wind picked up quite a bit over night. The boards, which in our "Cabin No. 1" are replacing the windows, were blowing in the wind and made a lot of noise. The sun rose in the glow of morning-sky, the wind still gusting strongly. The chairs on our little terrace toppled, the cups, even those full of coffee did the same.

Clam After breakfast we went to the rocks, which now (it was low tide) had risen from the waters, Coral and watched a few crabs, fishes, and the fauna in this environment. Klaus and Linda took a long walk along the beach whilst I returned to our cabin and continued reading.

Lunchtime came, and in the middle of the afternoon we went swimming. The breeze ceased and we all three went up to the lighthouse. A walk along the rocks here on the very tip of Cape Leveque followed. A great and spectacular view, whilst the sun was sending her last beams over the sky before disappearing behind some smoky cloud.

The Rocks around the cape are of a deep red colour. Underneath the red, porous sandstone Aboriginal burial site there is a hard black rock. All of it partly broken, wild, yet beautiful in it's own order against the sea and shaped by it.

After coming back from the seaside I washed some mussels found on the shore. On the way back to the cabin all of a sudden there was movement in the sand. A snake, around half a meter Red rocks of Cape Leveque long, finger-thick. Klaus and Linda were called; Ted our neighbor came too. He is Australian, looked at the snake, and said: "It's a brown" and his wife supplied "...they're deadly". Before we could prevent it, the snake found it's way to the cabin and went underneath the palm leaves covering the wooden walls of the cabin towards the outside.

We hope that this only will represent a temporary shelter for the animal, and certainly we would feel more comfortable if we knew for sure what we think is the case: That she has left due to all the noise we're generating.

Meanwhile we had dinner, and at present the room is very busy. Linda is reading up on what to do and see in the Lonely Planet, Klaus is working on the homepage on his notebook and I am typing these lines on mine.
