June 7th: Ayers Rock to Coober Pedy

Mount Connor On June 7th we had to leave Ayers Rock. Our original plan was to stay another day, but Ayers Rock airport had insisted that we left that day since the Olympic torch would arrive the day after (apparently there wasn't parking space enough!?!). We decided that we would not go to Alice Springs, but instead head south to Coober Pedy. However, we still wanted to see Kings Canyon. Having been there, we now agree that it was not worth the one-hour detour. Mount Connor, on the other hand, was much more impressive. Furthermore it was directly on our route.

Painted Desert Private opal mines We landed for fuel at Cadney Homestead - a friendly place and for once comparably cheap fuel. . The last leg before arriving at Coober Pedy went over some Our fire escape "painted desert" and the Opal Fields. Both very interesting and pretty in different ways from the air.

Radeka's picked us up at the airport. The driver told us that 80 percent of Coober Pedy's inhabitants live in so-called dugouts. Radeka's is also a dugout and we got a room 6,5 meters below ground.
