July 23rd: Katherine
The day started with low expectations, as we were pretty much forced to take a guided tour. Hiring a canoe and paddling through the Katherine Gorge was not possible since a "salty" (a salt-water crocodile - the dangerous kind) had been spotted some five days ago.

The question was only if we would go for the half or full day tour. Australia is a very nice country to travel in - it is, against some believes, not cheap though. Especially when it comes to tours. A four hour tour up and down the gorge on a big boat (harbour cruise type) sets you back $49. Add another $17.50 for the 27km return transfer to Katherine River.

Katherine Gorge High walls We took the eight hour tour ($87.50 including one way transfer - we hitchhiked back) and were positively surprised. The two guides had something interesting to tell most of the time. We didn't see all that much we hadn't seen before, except for some "freshies" (fresh water crocs - not dangerous at all - and kangaroos - the first for Lene and Dirk). Nevertheless it was a nice and relaxing trip with lots of stops where we went swimming in the gorge and once even under a waterfall.
